You may be aware that in the last fortnight there has been a sudden and unexpected rise in the number of Parvovirus cases in the Oswestry area.
To date all of these cases have been in dogs under a year old but of particular concern is that most of the dogs have been vaccinated against Parvovirus but are still getting infected, becoming ill and in rare cases dying as a result.
Initial sampling suggests that the outbreak is being potentially caused by a new strain of the virus and hence we are very concerned about the potential risk particularly to dogs under a year of age.
If your dog is lethargic, and off food with either vomiting and or diarrhoea we recommend calling us urgently for advice.
In addition, having had discussions with the manufacturer of the vaccine we recommend the following steps be taken:
In dogs under a year old it is recommended that they have a booster vaccination purely against Parvovirus to try and increase their natural immunity to the disease. We are able to offer this vaccination for a cost of just £10. This vaccination will be performed by one of our qualified nurses or vets and will be limited to a brief health check and the administration of the vaccine. If you require a full consultation to discuss any health concerns with one of the vets this will need to be booked in addition.
Alternatively, we can offer VacciCheck immunity screening for testing at an external laboratory for an approximate cost of £42. This blood test will provide information on your dog’s immune status.
For dogs that are older than a year who are UP TO DATE with their vaccinations there is no indication to take any further action at this time.
However, for dogs that are OVERDUE a vaccination (i.e have not been vaccinated in the last 12 months) these dogs will require either a booster vaccination OR to re-start the course depending on the interval from their last vaccination date.
